La La Land Birthday Party

When I turned 31 this February, the movie “La La Land” had just been released. I bought the soundtrack the day after I saw the movie and was properly devastated when Moonlight took out the Oscar for best picture instead of it. I even bought the piano score online in attempt to learn “Mia and Sebastian Theme” for myself. I went to see the movie a second time with Shalini (of Cuppalini Cakes) and Jasmin (of Endeavor Tea) who also loved it, so that kind of inspired my “La La Land” themed birthday party.

The underlying colour theme was Navy Blue, inspired by the promotional posters and the song “City of Stars” which won an Oscar.

For the party, the guys dressed up in shirts and ties and the girls in colourful casual dresses. Shalini made me a navy blue cake topped with colourful lollipops. I asked for it to be green tea flavoured (my favourite) and it was sooo delicious! Wita (of Design is Yay) made me a La La Land themed paper bunting and name placement for our guests.

I had the greatest time with my creative friends. There was no judgement for taking the time to make things look pretty and photographing them for the sheer pleasure of it. With a bit of help, I made blueberry mojito’s while Shalini prepared us a grazing table with cheese, fruit and crackers. While nibbling our way through this, we played Chinese whispers, but we had to draw our own clues. I spent my time getting confused/laughing for an hour straight. When someone gives you a clue that says “A dragon drinking wine at the grand canyon?!” how are you supposed to draw that?

Afterwards the guys went on to play board games while the girls had a flower crown workshop (run by yours truly) with tea, cakes and some savouries. The party ended with all of us sufficiently full, with our own flower crowns to take home .
